It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year: WWDC 2016

June 13, 2016

For those of you who are not die hard Apple fans you may be unaware of what time of year it is. Every June, Apple hosts an event known as the World Wide Developers Conference. It is a conference held annually in California, by Apple Inc. Apple uses this conference to showcase new applications and other technologies available for their developers. Typically, WWDC is opened with a Keynote, however in light of recent events this years opening was slightly different.

Tim Cook the CEO of Apple, opens this years WWDC by offering his condolences for those involved in the horrific tragedy that occurred in Orlando, Florida. He asks the participants to rise for a moment of silence for the victims and their families. For those of you who are unaware, it was just a few years ago that Tim Cook opened up about his personal life and shared his sexuality with the world.

This is the 22nd World Wide Developers conference. Much like the last few conferences the venue has been sold out, with over 5,000 attendees. Apple is so involved in the development of youths, that they offered over 350 scholarships, with the youngest recipient being a 9-year-old little girl. Apple has always been a company for the younger generations. However, the focus of this years WWDC, really drives the point home. Cook, the current CEO of apple stated “We believe that coding should be a required language in all schools”.

During this WWDC Apple focused on the new releases of WatchOS, TVOS, MacOS and iOS. This is the first time Apple has truly acknowledged all 4 platforms that their devices utilize. The MacOS, even received a new name. MacOS, previously known as OSX for the last 15 years, was the recipient of some rebranding this afternoon. After a number of years Apple came to the conclusion that the MacOS should follow the naming convention if its litter mates. However, that does not mean that the MacOS did not receive its own special name. This years MacOS has been named Sierra. The only one of the four OS platforms to receive a specific title.

The upgrades to the various platforms focus on further integration of Apple systems, for those with multiple devices. There were also a number of new features added to each Platforms to make them more adaptable and competitive. For example, the WatchOS no has an adaptive feature to appropriately track activity for those who are wheel chair bound. An additional feature also includes the ability to track the fitness progress of friends allowing you to send encouragement as well as track their fitness goals for the day, similar to the app. fitbit

Apple never ceases to amaze me. I am eagerly awaiting their event in July to find out about the new hand held devices being released in the fall.

Good post; we owe you a penny. Apple is clearly a technology leaders; took them many years to get there, yet they did it. Constant innovation and “jumping the S-curve.”
